John Callaghan

John Callaghan is a Senior Partner in the Toronto office of Gowling WLG. He has a broad practice that covers civil litigation, commercial litigation, administrative issues and regulatory offence work. He appears before all levels of court and his expertise is often sought for complex cases. John was a Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario for eight years, chairing its Government Relations and Public Affairs Committee, where he represented the profession before legislative and parliamentary committees and, successfully lobbied with others for the expansion of the Unified Family Court and extended funding for Legal Aid.
For 25 years, John was a member of the Civil Rules Committee, having been appointed by successive Chief Justices of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. A former Director of the Advocates Society, he a current Director of Legal Aid Ontario. John is co-author of Class Action Law and Practice, the leading class action text in Canada. He has been recognized as a leading counsel by Lexpert, The Best Lawyers in Canada, Benchmark Canada, and Chambers Global in areas such as class actions and commercial litigation. He also spent a number of years as an instructor of trial advocacy with the University of Toronto.
John was awarded his LL.B. by the University of Windsor.
