Shalini Konanur
Bencher Candidate
Shalini Konanur has been Executive Director of the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario since its inception in 2008. Throughout her career, she has worked exclusively in the legal aid system, practicing in areas that particularly affect low-income Ontarians, including government income and benefits; employment law for non-unionized workers; immigration; tenancy; as well as human rights and Charter test cases. In addition, she supports victims of gender-based violence or discrimination, such as intimate partner violence, human trafficking, elder abuse, and forced marriage. Before joining SALCO, Shalini worked at a clinic serving rural Renfrew County in Eastern Ontario and at Mississauga Community Legal Services.
She is a Governor on the Law Commission of Ontario’s Board of Governors, the National Board Chair for Action Canada for Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights (formerly Planned Parenthood Canada), a member of the Ontario Human Right Commission’s Community Advisory Committee, and the Toronto Police Services Anti-Racism Advisory Panel. Her leadership has been recognized with the Attorney General’s Victim Service Award of Distinction, the Ontario Bar Association’s Award of Excellence in the Promotion of Women’s Equality, and the Canadian Bar Association’s Legal Aid Leader Award.
Shalini holds a Bachelor of Arts from York University, and was awarded her LL.B. by its Osgoode Hall Law School.
