Sidney Troister LSM

Incumbent Bencher

Sidney Troister is a Senior Partner at Torkin Manes in Toronto, with a practice encompassing all aspects of commercial and residential real estate, leasing, and financing transactions. He is an arbitrator and mediator of real estate and commercial lending disputes, and also serves as counsel to the Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company and title insurers. With his broad real estate experience, he is consulted regularly by industry, government, and title insurers. A recipient of the Law Society Medal, Sidney was certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Real Estate and designated as a Chartered Arbitrator by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada.


Between 1990 and 2000, he was the co-head of Real Estate Law section of the Ontario Bar Admission Course and is the chair of the LSO’s annual Real Estate Law Summit, which Sidney founded in 2004. He is the author of the preeminent The Law of Subdivision Control in Ontario, the fourth edition of which reflects recent amendments to the Planning Act, in which Sidney played a leading role as a formal advisor to Municipal Affairs Minister Steven Clark. A sought-after speaker, he also presents to the LSO, the OBA, and many local law associations across Ontario.


As a Bencher, he has served on numerous committees and has chaired the Professional Development and Competence Committee, the Competency Task Force and the Audit and Finance Committee.


Sidney received a Bachelor of Arts from York University, and was awarded his LL.B. by Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
