FACT CHECK: Full Stop slate will cut LSO services…but won’t tell us which

Yesterday, the Full Stop slate sent an email blast to voters. Again, it was littered with half-truths and misinformation. Just like it wants to cut law library funding, now it wants to cut even more services on which lawyers and paralegals depend.

As evidence of so-called bloat it wants to cut, the Full Stop slate says the Law Society has more staff than any other regulator including the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

That’s like saying the City of Toronto has more employees than the City of Ottawa.

Let’s compare:

· The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) has 390 employees—regulating 46,183 members.

· The LSO actually has 556 employees—regulating 68,268 members.

· CPSO has a member to staff ratio of 118:1. The LSO’s ratio is 122:1.

Where is the bloat?

The Full Stop slate wants to cut the LSO budget. So the obvious question is: “what will they cut”?

They won’t tell you.

Why?
